In most rural African homes, kerosene lamps and firelights are the major source of illumination when it gets dark. Children have to read with this and deal with the unhealthy fumes from the kerosene lamps and fires which cause eye damage in the long run.

In 2004, Evans Wadongo a young Kenyan at age19 sought to create an alternative source of light that poses less health threat. This desire gave birth to MwangaBora solar lamp made from 50% recycled materials. MwangaBora is swahili for “good light”
