Mapouka or Macouka, is a modernized version of a traditional dance from the Dabou area of southeast Côte d’Ivoire. Women mostly perform Mapouka by shaking their rear end from side to side, facing away from the audience. The dance is less subtle and more sexually provocative than it’s original intent, a celebration of festivals. The dance of the behind is no different from the very popular twerking that is now a global phenomenon today.
